Week 11 - 12 Position and direction

National curriculum content

  • Describe positions on a 2-D grid as coordinates in the first quadrant
  • Describe movements between positions as translations of a given unit to the left/right and up/down
  • Plot specified points and draw sides to complete a given polygon

Lesson objectives

  1. Describe position using coordinates
  2. Plot coordinates
  3. Draw 2-D shapes on a grid
  4. Translate on a grid
  5. Describe translation on a grid

What we want children to know

  • Draw a pair of axes in one quadrant, with equal scales and integer labels.
  • Read, write and use pairs of coordinates, for example (2, 5), including using coordinate-plotting ICT tools.
  • Read, write and use pairs of coordinates.
  • Develop their understanding of coordinates by plotting given points on a 2-D grid.
  • Move shapes and points on a coordinate grid following specific directions using language such as: left/right and up/down.

What skills we want children to develop

Use knowledge to solve reasoning and problem solving questions such as:

Plotting Points

Plot these points on a grid.

(2, 4) (4, 2) (5, 8) (7, 6)

What shape has been created?

Always, Sometimes, Never

The number of points is equal to the number of vertices when they are joined together.

Pictorial and Concrete Resources

Place a small cube on the grid at coordinate (1, 1).

Move your cube 1 up. Move your cube 1 down.

What do you notice?

Now move your cube 3 to the right. Move your cube 3 to the left.

 What do you notice?

Mathematical Talk

Which is the x-axis?

Which is the y-axis?

In which order do we read and plot the coordinates?

Can you describe the translation?

Can you complete the following stem sentence: Shape A is translated ___ left/right and _____up/down to shape B.
