Week 10 - 12 Decimals A

National curriculum content

  • Recognise and write decimal equivalents of any number of tenths or hundredths
  • Recognise and write decimal equivalents
  • Find the effect of dividing a one or two-digit number by 10 and 100, identifying the value of the digits in the answer as ones, tenths and hundredths
  • Round decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number
  • Compare numbers with the same number of decimal places up to two decimal places

Lesson objectives

  1. Tenths as fractions
  2. Tenths as decimals
  3. Tenths on a place value chart
  4. Tenths on a number line
  5. Divide 1-digit by 10
  6. Divide 2-digits by 10
  7. Hundredths as fractions
  8. Hundredths as decimals
  9. Hundredths on a place value chart
  10. Divide 1 or 2-digits by 100

What we want children to know

  • How to count up and down in tenths and hundredths and recognise that hundredths arise when dividing an object by one hundred and dividing tenths by ten.
  • To be able to recognise and write decimal equivalents of any number of tenths or hundredths.
  • The effect of dividing a one or two-digit number by 10 and 100.
  • How to identify the value of the digits in the answer as ones, tenths and hundredths.
  • The relation between tenths and hundredths as decimals.

What skills we want children to develop

Use knowledge to solve reasoning and problem solving questions such as:

Who is right?

Dora says, “5 hundredths is equivalent to 50 tenths.”

Amir says, “50 hundredths is equivalent to 5 tenths.”

Explain why.

Use five counters and a place value grid. Place all five counters in either the ones or the tenths column. How many different numbers can you make? Describe the numbers you have made by completing the stem sentences.

Describe the pattern

7,000 ÷ 100 = 70

700 ÷ 100 = 7

70 ÷ 100 = 0.7

7 ÷ 100 = 0.07

Can you complete the pattern starting with 5,300 divided by 100?

Mathematical Talk

  • What is a tenth? How many different ways can we write a tenth?
  • How else could you represent the decimal/fraction?
  • What’s the same/different between 0.2, 1.2 and 0.8?
  • How many tenths are in one whole?
  • Do I need to use 0 as a place holder when dividing a 2-digit number by 10?
  • What is the same and what is different about a number written as a fraction and a number written as a decimal?
