Community

There are 7 lessons to complete. Your child will be elected Mayor of Oak Town and whilst pretending to be Mayor they will:

 

  • Understand what a community is
  • Explore different types of communities
  • Look at the different groups that make up a community
  • Consider the benefits of being part of a community
  • Create a coat of arms to represent the different communities they are part of
  • Be able to define 'role' and 'responsibility'
  • Identify people and groups that help the community
  • Understand what human rights are
  • Explore the rights children have
  • Write and deliver a speech about the importance of rules and laws in society

Environment

Your child will learn about:

 

  • water, where it comes from, looking specifically at the water cycle. They will then learn the three main uses for water and how to save or reduce water in their household.
  • reducing, reusing and recycling. They will explore how a landfill operates and create their own product from recycling household items.
  • climate change and the causes and effects. They will learn about the greenhouse gases and carry out an experiment to see these effects.
  • what biodiversity means and what makes up an ecosystem. They will also learn that these places are under threat and carry out a speaking and listening task with parents and carers about what they can do to help.
  • deforestation - they will decode the word to identify the meaning and look at what impact this has on animals.

First Aid

 

Click the website link below to access the online classroom with the Oak Academy. This is free and will provide you and your child with clear explanations using an online teacher. There are 7 lessons to complete.

 

Lesson 1 Minor Cuts - This lesson covers major and minor cuts. If this is a sensitive topic for your child then please make sure they are adequately supervised. In this lesson children will learn about first aid and how to treat a minor cut. By the end of the lesson, the children will be able to write instructions on how to treat someone who has a minor cut.

 

Lesson 2 Broken Bones - They will look at why bones break and what key signs there are to identify a broken bone.

 

Lesson 3 Burns - This lesson covers burns. If this a sensitive topic for your child then please make sure they are adequately supervised. In this lesson the children will learn about burns, how they are caused and how to carry out first aid to treat them.

 

Lesson 4 Choking - In this lesson, children will learn the difference between mild and severe choking, the action that must be taken and know how to respond to each and react to a scenario of someone choking.

 

Lesson 5 Recovery position - Children will learn why and when to use the recovery position. They will be shown a step by step process with pictures for them to practice.

 

Lesson 6 First Aid Kits - In this lesson children will learn about first aid kits by looking at what the NHS has recommended to put into a first aid kit. They will make a mini first aid kit which they can use in an emergency.

 

Lesson 7 The Stethoscope - In this lesson children will be talking about the stethoscope and what it is used for. They will be looking at how the stethoscope monitors the heart and how many times it beats per minute.
