What we want children to know
- Counting the beat helps them stay in time with the music, enables them to time their moves correctly and to move with rhythm.
- Unison is performing the same movement at the same time.
- What a beat of 8 is – count 8 beats and the restart the count after 8.
- Canon is performing a movement one after another.
- The purpose of a cool down is to decrease the heart rate to its resting rate.
- Rhythm is the timing of dance movements / actions to the music.
- Dance phrase is a series of movements that are linked together to form part of the overall choreography of the dance.
- You should always look at the audience when performing (unless stated).
- Choreography is the sequence of steps and movements in a dance.
- The three different levels in dance are high, medium or low.
What skills we want children to develop
- Continue to develop a broader range of skills and movement patterns, exploring and practicing movement ideas inspired by stimulus.
- Use basic compositional principals when creating dances – combing movements fluently and effectively.
- Perform a range of movements accurately with a sense of rhythm, clarity and confidence.
- Use imagination to create and structure dance motifs, phrases and sections of dances, developing expressive qualities.
- Explore, improvise and combine movement ideas, fluently and effectively inspired by a stimulus.
- Perform movements to an audience with rhythm and confidence.

Badminton

- Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
- Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
- Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Lesson objectives
- To know and describe the correct grip and stance when holding a racket.
- To adopt a good ready position.
- To play shots on the forehand and backhand side of the body.
- To use a variety of different shots, and serves, hitting with increasing consistency.
- To employ tactics in games.
- To participate in games following the rules and scoring correctly.
What we want children to know
- How to hold the racket correctly when playing a forehand shot.
- To form a V shape between thumb and index finger and shake hands with the racket grip.
- The benefits of having a good ready position/stance during a rally.
- Correct stance - Stand side on with your dominant leg forward and the other behind.
- A forehand lift is played at waist height in front of your body.
- How to chassé - Imagine that one foot is chasing the other but never quite catches it - The chasse step is sometimes referred to as a quicker, more agile movement on a badminton court.
- To lunge bend front knee and keep in line with front toe.
- How to perform a backhand and overhead clear.
- How to hit the shuttle whilst on the move.
What skills we want children to develop
- Apply principles suitable for attacking, e.g., identifying gaps and when to apply principles suitable for defending e.g., position on court.
- Perform tactical serves to help deceive opponents and score points.
- Perform a chasse step and lunge.
- Using the correct footwork to hit the ball/shuttle with good technique.
- Participate in competitive games, modified where appropriate.
- Direct a ball/shuttle to a target area.
- Keep a good grip on the racket to be able to play both a forehand and a backhand.
