Year 5 Gymnastics and Dodgeball

Gymnastics

National curriculum content

  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.

Lesson objectives

  1. To show flexibility and technique when performing gymnastic elements.
  2. To travel fluently on the floor and on/off apparatus.
  3. To travel with confidence choosing different pathways.
  4. To create longer sequences.
  5. To show rhythm and creativity when working with others.
  6. To perform in front of an audience.

What we want children to know

  • Communication - it is important that both children know and understand what they are doing and have the opportunity to raise and share their ideas.
  • Teamwork - cooperation and teamwork will be required to successfully complete a task.
  • The levels, speeds and directions used.
  • Perform asymmetrically or symmetrically.
  • Mirroring - performing facing each other showing a mirror image of actions.
  • Cannoning - performing one after another. Upon the first child completing the action(s) the next child immediately starts their performance.
  • Supporting each other - this may be a consideration when performing balances - think about size and height of partner for the elements being performed.
  • A Sequence is a series of actions that are linked together - they can include any type of actions e.g. balances, shapes, travelling, jumps, rolls.
  • A sequence can link different types of actions (e.g. 1 shape, 1 way of travelling, 1 balance) or a number of the same type of action (e.g. 3 different balances).
  • How it looks - ensure the different actions are performed with quality and there is a flow to the sequence.
  • Show a clear beginning and end to each action in the sequence.
  • How to link the actions together - smooth transitions between each action.
  • Identify strengths - what are the areas of the routine that work/are performed well? How can these be developed?
  • Identify areas that can be improved - what are the areas of the routine that can be improved/are not performed as well? How can these be improved?
  • The order of the actions - can the flow be improved by changing the order?
  • The level, speed and direction of actions - can these elements be changed to develop the routine?
  • Add, remove or change elements - can the flow/look of the routine be developed/improved in this way?
  • Technique - are there technical elements within the routine that can be developed/improved?
  • Increase/decrease the complexity of actions - will this develop/improve the routine?
  • Gymnastics is about performing the work you have created.

What skills we want children to develop

  • Explore, improvise, and combine movement ideas fluently and effectively, using skills in different ways, performing confidently, with clarity and a sense of rhythm.
  • Perform movements accurately with a sense of rhythm.
  • Make up longer sequences and perform them with fluency and clarity of movement, choosing skills that meet the needs of the situation.
  • Develop your own gymnastic sequences by understanding, choosing and applying a range of compositional principles; varying direction, level and pathways to improve the look of a sequence.
  • Develop flexibility, strength, control, technique, and balance.
  • Use combinations of dynamics using the space effectively.

Vocabulary

Gymnastics, key shapes, balance, rolls, jumps, co-ordination, routine, travelling, apparatus, sequence, partners, teamwork.

Dodgeball

National curriculum content

  • Use running, jumping, throwing, and catching in isolation and in combination.
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Lesson objectives

  1. To throw a ball at a moving target.
  2. To use the most appropriate throwing technique for the situation.
  3. To play catching games.
  4. To dodge a ball by jumping and skipping.
  5. To dodge a ball by jockeying and galloping.
  6. To use peer evaluation to discuss strategies and tactics and apply these to your own game.

What we want children to know

  • Develop the children’s ability to perform skills quickly and react fast in different situations.
  • Play games that increase their confidence and ability to move quickly and control the ball.
  • Controlling the ball.
  • Aiming for a target.
  • Working together and cooperating with each other.
  • Understand when it is best to use the different skills.

What skills we want children to develop

  • Participate in games fairly, following the rules.
  • Show good teamwork.
  • Apply appropriate skills and tactics in game situations.
  • Move quickly (dodge) with good control. Improve control when moving at speed.
  • Increase accuracy and consistency of throws, including a side shot throw, towards a moving target.
  • Successfully catch a ball at different heights.
  • Demonstrate a variety of different throwing techniques with good accuracy, pace, and consistency.
  • Take part in competitive games, playing fairly and working cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Use different ways to dodge the ball (jump, gallop, and jockey.)
  • Use appropriate tactics in games, discuss, and apply strategies needed to win.

Vocabulary

Speed, dodge, positioning, catch, under arm throw, bounce, side shot, target, strike and roll.
