Year 4 Tennis and Basketball

Tennis

National curriculum content

  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.
  • Compare their performance with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

 

Lesson objectives

  1. Can watch, track, and catch a tennis ball successfully.
  2. Perform a basic forehand action with increasing accuracy.
  3. Perform a basic backhand shot with increasing control.
  4. Keep a rally going using a range of shots.
  5. Hit a ball into space (at different speeds and heights) to try and beat an opponent.
  6. Compete with others.

 

What we want children to know

  • Perform basic skills needed for the games with control and accuracy, including hitting a ball towards a target, throwing and stopping the ball.
  • Perform a basic forehand with control and accuracy.
  • Throw/send/hit a ball into space, at different speeds and heights to make it difficult for their opponent.
  • Begin to apply basic movements in a range of activities and in combination.
  • Apply basic principles for attacking including finding and using space in game situations.
  • Keep a rally going using a range of shots.
  • Compete with others – Keeping and following the rules of the game.

 

What skills we want children to develop

  • Know that a cooperative rally involves participants trying to keep the ball travelling back and forth for as long as possible.
  • Develop the ability to send and receive the ball in a cooperative manor.
  • Be able to play a cooperative rally.
  • Be able to hit the ball in different directions accurately.
  • Understand the rules of Mini Tennis.
  • Know that a singles game is one player verses another player.
  • Develop the skills and tactics learnt so far by playing singles games.

Basketball

  1. Pass/send a ball with increasing accuracy.
  2. Move with the ball keeping it under control.
  3. Pass the ball in different ways.
  4. Find and use space well to keep possession.
  5. Apply basic attacking and defending principles.
  6. Play in small sided games, employing simple tactics.

 

What we want children to know

  • Move the ball keeping it under control whilst changing direction.
  • Pass, shoot and receive a ball with increasing accuracy, control and success, Pass in different ways e.g. high, low, fast, slow.
  • Find and use spaces in game situations and work well as part of a team.
  • Apply basic attacking and defending principles.
  • Use a range of tactics to keep possession of the ball; and explain simple tactics in game situations.

 

What skills we want children to develop

  •  Perform skills with the ball keeping it under control.
  • Moving around the ball and reacting to it to keep it under control.
  • Learn different passing techniques, specifically the chest and bounce passes.
  • Be aware of accuracy and weight (speed of passes) and how they might affect a pass.
  • Understand the importance of aiming and accuracy when shooting the ball.
  • Know what is meant by good, fair play.
  • Know when it is best to use the different skills that have been learnt during a game.
  • Understand the importance of teamwork and working together.
