Year 3 Orienteering and Golf

Orienteering

National curriculum content

  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team.

 

Lesson objectives

  1. To work co-operatively as part of a team.
  2. To communicate effectively with others.
  3. Participate in team games solving problems with others.
  4. To understand the different points on a map.
  5. To make a map.
  6. To take part in an orienteering event.

 

What we want children to know

  • How to use all the skills needed for orienteering: agility, balance and co-ordination.
  • That teamwork is vital to solve problems efficiently and effectively.
  • How to match symbols.
  • How to use Google Earth.
  • How to create a key for a map.
  • How to create a map with all the correct features.
  • How to read and navigate a map.
  • Picture orienteering uses many of the skills that are required in Orienteering.
  • A ‘single control event’ is an orienteering activity where participates must find controls, one at a time, returning to a base location before going to the next one.

 

What skills we want children to develop

  • Recognise where you are on a map.
  • Demonstrate all the physical skills needed for orienteering: agility, balance and co-ordination.
  • Recognise that activities need thinking through and planning.
  • Move confidently in different ways, developing agility, balance and co-ordination.
  • Participate in competitive orienteering events, following instructions of the game.
  • Develop a basic understanding of map reading and making, and apply these skills and techniques in games.
  • Have knowledge of safety rules and procedures for taking part in an orienteering event.

Golf

  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

 

Lesson objectives

  1. To successfully hit the target using a putt shot.
  2.  To play putting games.
  3. To develop the chip shot.
  4. To play games with others.
  5. To compete in target games against others.
  6. To apply correct techniques when competing.

 

What we want children to know

  • The importance of accuracy when chipping.
  • How to putt accurately and effectively.
  • How to chip the ball safely and correctly using a chipping club.
  • Demonstrate good teamwork skills.

 

What skills we want children to develop

  • Explore the skills required to play golf successfully.
  •  Develop and apply the chipping technique to competitive games.
  • Develop, explore, and demonstrate the ability to ‘putt’ accurately and effectively.
  • Demonstrate good teamwork skills.
  • Understand the importance of accuracy when chipping
