Y5 Term 5 The Alps

National curriculum content

Use maps to focus on countries, cities and regions in Europe. Be taught to understand a region of another European country. Be taught to understand some of the physical and human processes that shape a region. Extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include Europe. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features.


Lesson objectives

  1. Where are the Alps?
  2. How were the Alps formed?
  3. What are the man industries in the Alps?
  4. How have glaciers and avalanches changed the landscape?


What we want children to know

  • Use physical and political maps to identify a region in Europe
  • Understand how fold mountain ranges are formed
  • Understand the importance of the tourist industry to the Alpine communities, and to understand that tourism also brings disadvantages
  • Understand how glaciers and avalanches have influenced the Alpine landscape


What skills we want children to develop

  • Use Digimaps to locate the Alps and surrounding areas
  • Use maps to focus on countries, cities and regions in Europe
