Y3 Term 2 The Earth

National curriculum content

Improve locational knowledge through identifying the position and significant of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and the Arctic and Antarctic Circle.

 

Practice geographical skills through using maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate features studied.

 

Lesson objectives

  1. Identify different parts of the world map
  2. Explore the idea of addresses
  3. Identify the position of lines of latitude
  4. Introduce different time zones
  5. Introduce the International Date Line

 

What we want children to know

  • Continents and countries in different hemispheres
  • The different parts of an address
  • The location of the key circles of lines of latitude and longitude
  • Day and night in relation to the Earth’s rotation on its axis
  • Different time zones and the location of the International Date Line

 

What skills we want children to develop

  • The ability to use and compare maps, atlases and globes
  • Increase their knowledge of Digimaps to explore the World
  • Be able to describe locations using the points of a compass
  • Concept of time and how to read a clock face
