The nappy challenge

  • Opportunities for children to ask their own questions and make decisions on how to answer their questions using different scientific enquiry activities.

 

Lesson objectives

  1. Explore the properties of a disposable nappy
  2. Test which nappy is the most absorbent
  3. Test the elasticity of nappies
  4. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of disposable nappies

 

What we want children to know

  • The names and properties of materials
  • How to answer their own questions about the properties of nappies
  • How to use a table and draw a graph
  • Who invented nappies
  • How to discuss information and explain their choices
  • To use their knowledge of materials to design, test and evaluate their nappy

 

What skills we want children to develop

  • Make systematic observations and classify names and properties of materials
  • Use scientific vocabulary and evidence to ask and answer questions
  • Carry out a fair test, recording results in a table and drawing a graph to show data
  • Use simple organisational devices to record information
  • Carry out comparative tests and measure using standard measures
  • Report and present findings from enquiries
