From Year 3 through to Year 6, the No Nonsense Spelling scheme is implemented as the systematic synthetic phonics programme is completed. Spelling is taught and tested weekly across school. Alongside this, spellings are given out as part of the children’s weekly homework. The spelling curriculum includes opportunities to revise and revisit common KS1 patterns; and spelling patterns are repeated to reinforce skills.
In Year 3, some children still access phonics through the Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme. Children who receive phonics intervention are given spellings that match the sounds taught that week. These spellings are taken from the RWI books and matching sound lists. Across Year 3, spelling is taught daily with children accessing spellings sessions tailored to their needs.
