Cotmanhay Junior School

Safe, Happy Learning

At Cotmanhay Junior School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) is crucial in supporting children in their personal development, and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society. As a school, we follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme which equips our children for the future by encouraging resilience, integrity, team work, confidence, good mental and physical health, critical thinking and independence, all in a nurturing environment. We aim for all students to develop an understanding of the ever changing world in which we live and develop the skills necessary to take an active role in our school community, wider community and as part of a diverse world. SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in the world.

Each year group has a jigsaw character with its distinctive colour and a chime bar to encourage calmness. Jigsaw is structured into 6 half-termly puzzles (units of work) with all year groups working on the same theme (puzzle) at the same time. These are:

Autumn Term

Being me in my world

Celebrating differences

Spring Term

Dreams and goals

Healthy me

Summer Term

Changing me

The lessons have two learning intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills. Jigsaw is relevant to children living in today’s world as it helps them understand and be equipped to cope with issues like body image, cyber and homophobic bullying, and internet safety.
